At Pear Tree Vets, not only do we want to provide the best care for your pets, but we want to do so in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
We are at the early stages of our journey, but here are some of our plans in order for us to minimise the impact from our clinic on the environment.
Here are our Green Goals for Pear Tree Vets:
Unfortunately, all inhaled anaesthetics are potent greenhouse gases. To minimize the impact of necessary anaesthetics, we use specialist environmentally friendly anaesthetic equipment resulting in minimal atmospheric pollution.
We have invested in high quality oxygen generators, which can take oxygen from the air and store it for use during anaesthetics, avoiding the need for frequent deliveries of bulky oxygen containers, therefore reducing traffic and improving sustainability.
Our autoclaves that sterilise instruments and our dental equipment that helps treats dental disease both require purified or distilled water to function. Rather than purchasing this in thick plastic containers, we have invested in a water distiller to minimise single-use plastic.
Fleas, ticks and worms can all pose risks to our pets (and in rare cases, risks to humans too). At our clinic, we will offer tailored advice and recommendations based on your pet's individual risk profile. We will also offer faecal worm egg counts for those who prefer regular testing to regular treatment.
There is also lots of evidence to show that "spot-on" parasite treatments can be harmful to the environment. We plan to prioritise oral/tablet parasite treatments where suitable to minimise the environmental impact of "spot-on" treatments.
Long term, we plan to fit solar panels to the practice.
