Vet Dentistry

Veterinary dentistry is focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases and conditions in animals.

Here at Pear Tree Vets, we focus on preventative dental care where possible to avoid more invasive procedures such as extractions which are more costly.

About Dentistry in Small Animals

Maintaining healthy teeth is vital for your pet's health and wellbeing. The best way to keep on top of this is with brushing your pet’s teeth regularly with pet specific products and feeding food that encourages chewing.

If your pet requires professional dentistry, such as cleaning, dental surgery or tooth extractions, we offer all of these services at Pear Tree Vets.

  • Stage One:
An anaesthetic to thoroughly clean your pet's teeth and take full mouth x-rays in order to properly check your pet's teeth, both above and below the gum line. We assess each tooth, and chart them, and determine if any extractions might be required. We charge a fixed fee for this procedure.

We then discharge your pet and go through the x-rays, charts and photos with you. We decide together what extractions are needed and we can then provide an accurate estimate for any extractions that might be required in Stage Two.

    Stage Two:
Extractions are performed under anaesthetic. Because we have already performed Stage One, you know what Stage Two is going to cost, as we have already thoroughly assessed your pet's mouth and we know what is required. After extractions, we do recommend soft food only for at least 10 days, and your pet will also be sent home with pain relief.

*Staging your pet's dentistry is our recommendation and not a requirement. We will always tailor a plan to suit what works for you and your pet. If some cases, it may be that having both Stage One and Stage Two in one procedure is appropriate.

  • A dental examination with scale and polish helps with removing all tartar and plaque, helping to prevent tooth rot and deterioration of the gum.

If during the examination of the teeth and gums we identify teeth that are likely to be causing discomfort to your pet, we will look to extract them with your permission. This is will be at an additional charge.
